Which, I guess, does not protect them from rape. Actually, I do suspect that the opposite is the case.

Black women are actually at far greater risk for rape than white women, so no, it doesn't help.

I suspected as much.

Actually, I think the cliche of the noble knight who saves and protects distressed damsels, was probably a good thing when it was invented. I mean, using your privilege to help less privileged people is a good thing. It only becomes a bad thing when people start to insist that women need to stay oppressed and therefore helpless so that there can be "gentlemen".

Hmmm... maybe. What I hate about the distressed damsels thing is that it places victims into a narrow category. That should be avoided at all costs, I think.

Which is precisely why I love the idea of superheroes, and -heroines - and even more than that, love settings where the "heroes" make a point of noting the responsibility inherent in their abilities, or even better, earn or create those abilities themselves (Iron Man, Blue Beetle, etc.)

Superman isn't "super" because he's an alien; Darkseid and Mongul and others across his universe are stronger than him, or faster, or smarter. He earns his name because he is a good man.

I strongly - one might say vehemently - disagree with that assertion.

I guess you're right. It is both here and there, but people make mistakes.

Meh, that's a problem with the writers, not the character. I mean, Morpheus/The Sandman was a anthropomorphic aspect of creation, able to stare down the entire might of Hell with naught but a bit of snark. He was still a very interesting character.
