I know someone who says they probably would have turned out a typical sociopath if they didn't have excellent parents, and as it is they have no empathy. They rationally decided happy people were more interesting, and set up a support forum which has saved multiple lives and which they can run more easily than someone with empathy because they don't burn out emotionally. Empathy isn't the same as sympathy or compassion.
