This is one of the reasons I don't see why anyone would want self-aware AI. (Surely, if they can code something self-aware, they can code something which outputs the same info which isn't self-aware? Shouldn't that be easier?)

I just feel like what Zoa said is something similar to what a slave owner might be taught to say, "Ah yes, if we give voting rights to the blacks then society would die in flames."

No. This is the wrong question. Chinese room experiment doesn't work without a human being inside. They want a big and fast enough Chinese room, they put a person inside. If we develop self-aware AI in real life, it will inevitably be because the tasks we required of them are that complicated.

I don't think giving blowjobs or offering directions on the street is complicated enough to require self-awareness.

This much is true, but that's not the function Zoa serves. It is not a fleshlight. It meets deeper emotional needs such as stimulating realistic human conversation. You could absolutely have a chute spit out a fleshlight just like it spits out burritos.
