Of course, Nicole is simplifying things for Jamie and Ellen, here. This is not the only way to cast - but I won't insult you, you're all perfectly capable of Googling "how to knit".

(Saturday morning, INT: EB and JH's apartment)
JH: I'm left handed. Is that going to be a problem?
NP: Actually, that makes it easier. You can work with the needle in your dominant hand. Sit facing each other, and mirror each other's movements.

NP: Okay, so, to start, we have to cast on. I assume you both know how to make a standard slipknot?
NP: Leave yourself a little tail of about ten centimeters.
--------------
(hand closeup)
NP: Slide the loop of the slipknot onto your needle, and don't tighten it too much - we're going to have to be able to stick a needle through that loop later.
--------------
JH: ...and that's a stitch?
NP: Yep! You have officially cast one stitch! You have, technically, knit something.
EB: Awesome. Are we done?
