A few things to note:

1) This is what's called "English" method. There's other methods.

2) While the yarn may be going more or less where it's supposed to, Jamie and Ellen's hands and fingers absolutely are not. If you're not a knitter, you should be aware that these panels are like watching someone learn to tie their shoes with two fists and their teeth. If you're going to learn to knit, for the love of God, go find a proper diagram somewhere.

3) Jamie doesn't know the term, but the proper spelling is "purl". There was a banner ad floating around a while back for a comic called "Woohooligan" that featured a Klingon knitting, and his speech bubble said "knit one, pearl two" and it bugged me every time I saw it (though not so much that I didn't take the advertiser's money).

0403-------------------------------------

(Saturday morning, INT: EB and JH's apartment)

NP: Okay, so you've each cast twenty stitches. Now, we're going to get started on the second row, so grab your other needle, and put it in your dominant hand.
--------------

NP: Make sure the loose yarn is on the far side of your work. Stick your point through the stitch, and use it to grab a loop.

(hand closeup)
NP: You're going to pull that loop back through the stitch, and once you've got it, push the old stitch off the needle you were holding it on. That's what we usually mean when we say "knit one".
JH: So what's "pearl", then?
--------------
NP: "Purl" is the same thing as "knit", but you do it mirrored.
EB: So I put on a fake goatee and enjoy myself?
JH: Please don't, I've had enough evil twins for a while...
