Doing what someone tells you to do is not the same thing as being nice to them.

Doing what someone tells you to do is not the same thing as being a nice person in general.

Doing what someone tells you to do is not an effective means of avoiding responsibility for your actions.

In fact, doing what someone tells you to do - particularly if you do so in an exact and literal fashion - can be one of the most bratty, selfish, childish things you can do.

...which is not to say, of course, that you should never do as you're told. Just recognize and accept that following orders or requests is not, in and of itself, intrinsically meritorious.

0596-------------------------------------
(Sunday night, INT: EB and JH's living room)

JH: I'm confused. Do you want me to date Gina or not?
EB: I don't! But I don't want me saying that I don't to be the reason that you don't. I especially don't want a scenario in which you're telling Gina "I'd love to go out with you, but Ellen said not to".
JH: I wouldn't say that.
--------------
EB: Okay, what would you say? If Gina summoned up a pair of ladyballs and said "Hey, there's this great movie out, let's go on date number two", what would you tell her?
JH: Um... probably "What time are you picking me up?"
EB: So you do want to date her?
--------------
JH: No. I agree, it's a bad idea. But she knows herself better than even you do, so her opinion trumps yours, and if she wants-
EB: Jamie, DOING WHAT PEOPLE TELL YOU IS NOT THE SAME THING AS BEING A NICE PERSON.
--------------
JH: Okay, so I'm not going to Richard's grave, then.
EB: Do whatever you want, I'm going back to bed.
