Sometimes you don't need a cataclysmic event to make the world (as you know it) end. Sometimes all you need to do is change one rule.
Of course, like many of the traditional rules that make the world what it is, Ellen and Jamie's Rule has changed and mutated in the 767 strips since it was implemented, and most of that change has simply been implied, assumed, and accepted. It needed to be thrown out - or, at least, revised - and not just because it stood in the way of these two getting their smooch on.

0779-------------------------------------
(Saturday evening, INT: EB and JH's living room)
JH: Okay, before we go any further, can we please agree that the Rule is over and done with?
EB: Oh yeah, yeah, obviously. No more Rule. It was a stupid idea to begin with.
--------------
JH: I don't think it was a stupid idea. You had a good reason for implementing it. But I admit, it did make me feel paranoid and uncomfortable at times.
EB: Paranoid, really?
--------------
JH: I think a certain amount of flirting - or joshing around that could be misconstrued as flirting - can be normal in otherwise platonic relationships. And... and I can't afford to be evicted. I really don't have any other place to go.
EB: Jamie, I wouldn't really do that to you, you know that.
--------------
JH: That was literally what the Rule was. That you would really do that.
EB: Well, okay, maybe I would, but I'd feel super bad while I was doing it.
