0999-------------------------------------
(Friday afternoon, INT: hospital waiting room)
JH: Y'know what maybe the worst thing is, in life? The real root of all evil?
JH: Perseverance.
RoK: Perseverance?
JH: Yeah.
--------------
JH: I mean, sure, sometimes perseverance through hard times pays off and your life gets better. But there are so many people who don't have a realistic path to a better life. They're hanging on... just for the sake of hanging on. Their lives will not ever get any better.
--------------
JH: In persevering in their pain, they're just extending the amount of pain that exists. The universe would, objectively, be a better place with less total suffering in it if those people just gave up and... stopped suffering.
RoK: Jamie, that is possibly the worst philosophy about life I have ever, ever heard.
RoK: And I've had to read fifteen year olds' essays about Atlas Shrugged.
--------------
RoK: And you want to know what the worst thing about that philosophy is?
JH: What's that?
RoK: It's that right now, I can't think of any way to prove it wrong.
